Welcome to my Blog!
Hi! My name is Carly Peeters and I am your Miss Teen International 2017. I created this blog to bring awareness to literacy! Literacy and education have always been important to my family, and my mom would read books to me and my sister before bed which I believe played a vital role in my love for reading and learning. As a child I was in and out of the hospital due to infections because of my weak immune system and I was allergic to just about everything. I couldn’t eat pizza because I was allergic to the sauce, I couldn’t have OJ or strawberries, and when my doctor tried to prescribe me antibiotics for a common cold, I went into a toxic shock.
Needless to say, I had a lot of free time while stuck in the hospital, and instead of watching TV I was reading books. This allowed me to develop advanced literacy skills before entering kindergarten, and I found that once in school I was ahead of most of my peers and I consistently scored advanced on all the standardized tests. However, I knew some kids who were not so lucky and while they were extremely intelligent and loved, reading was not valued as much in their household. Children that are not reading at their grade level by third grade are 4 times likelier to drop out of school.
I chose my platform Literally Literacy, so that I can advocate the importance of literacy, especially before kids start kindergarten. Through my platform I get to work with two phenomenal organizations, Jumpstart and BuildOn, and hopefully I will work with many more in the future!
